Training to Failure – Necessary or Overrated?

Post by WScott06 »

Some coaches push going to failure on every set, others say it just kills recovery. What’s been your experience, do you train to failure regularly or stop short?

Rarely train to failure on heavy lifts. Too taxing and recovery suffers.

I leave 1–2 reps in the tank on compounds but sometimes hit failure on accessories.

Mental challenge is big. Training to failure occasionally teaches limits.

Beginners don’t need failure. Consistency and progressive overload matter more.

So, is failure optional and exercise-specific, not mandatory?

Exactly. Compounds stop short. Isolation goes ahead. Keeps joints safe.

Recovery is key. Failure every day = sore CNS, bad sleep, less motivation.

I sprinkle in 1 failure set per muscle group weekly. Enough to test limits.

Helps psychologically to show you what you’re capable of.
